Executive Summary
Today, music artists have many alternatives to traditional major label marketing, promotion, distribution, and sales channels, but each require an investment in time and resources that could be applied to new music projects. In many ways, the music business has become more complex with technology taking a major role in creating new types of web-based marketing, promotion, and distribution, while still supporting traditional CD packaging and distribution. At the same time, the opportunities for artists have never been better, with the ability to market direct to the consumer and eliminate many layers of costs and time in the middle.
It was for these reasons that Dragon 9 Ventures LLC created Summertime Records as a new type of record label that will provide partnership services to independent music artists, including marketing, promotion, sales, and distribution. Marketing & promotion includes web sites, fan database, email & newsletter campaigns, web search engine advertising, and other web-related marketing programs. Sales channels & distribution include digital tracks, digital albums, and CD albums, as well as digital streaming options through monthly membership programs.
Technology will continue to play a significant role as worldwide distribution increases to more than fifty percent of units shipped in the form of digital tracks, and the remaining units shipped shared by digital albums and CD albums. In addition, cell phones, portable media players, and other forms of personal music devices will help drive these numbers further into increased digital forms of delivery. Summertime Records will leverage these technology and business trends to delivery high quality products & services that support music artists within marketing, promotion, and distribution, allowing the artist to focus on their music projects.
A project plan for a music artist will focus on the business and technology elements for creating and implementing marketing, promotion, distribution, and sales channel programs. Where possible, start-up activities will put programs in place with minimal costs involved, and still allow for expansion in distribution as needed.
